A recent study has re-confirmed that patients with low back pain have good results when they use chiropractic care. The medical journal Spine conducted research specifically to learn whether patients felt better after treatment for low back pain following manipulation by a chiropractor or following the standard medical care. This is important for those patients who might prefer a non-pharmacologic option in treating their low back pain!
The researchers selected patients who were having low back pain which had begun in the previous three months. Some of these participants were treated with usual medical care, which can involve the use of over-the-counter analgesics or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) for pain relief. Another participant group was treated with manual manipulations performed by a chiropractor. After one month, the groups were polled to determine how much they had improved. The patients who had received manual manipulation of the low back had more improvement than the group who received standard medical care!
