A recent article in the British Medical Journal looked at the use of use of opioids (drugs like oxycontin, vicodin, percocet, duragesic), that are being prescribed in increasing amounts for back pain. Despite a lack of research showing long term benefit, these drugs are the most commonly prescribed class of drugs. In my 15 years of practice as a chiropractic and physiotherapy provider in the Rockville area, it is not uncommon for me to see patients who have been unsuccessfully treated with these drugs before a trial of the far safer chiropractic and physiotherapy has been implemented.
