Great Granns Woodlawn MD

Nestled in a little out of the way strip mall is an unlikely scrumptious find!

At 1724 Woodlawn Drive in Woodlawn, Maryland, Security Plaza is tucked off of the main road behind the Shoe City Warehouse. The strip mall has had its ups and downs over the years and despite some staples, like Barrett Family Chiropractic and My Driving Academy, other businesses and restaurants seem to come and go. The newest arrival to the plaza is Great Granns; a down home Southern soul food restaurant that had its own following before moving to this new space.

Over the years

The current suite has been occupied by everything from a Karate School to a sub shop to everything in between. Great Granns seems to have breathed new life into Suite 9 with an exciting and tasty menu. Great Granns was originally located on North Avenue before moving to its current location. They brought a large following of loyal clientele from North Avenue with them! After tasting their food it was obvious to me why they have so many loyal followers.

This current location

Offers both take out and eat in casual dining options. Most of their patrons choose to call in and take out but there are still a fair number who chose to take a seat and eat in the friendly relaxed setting.

According to the owners of Great Granns:

"In our household, good food was served every day! Greens were pulled from the stalk, string beans were snapped, macaroni and cheese was baked with the highest quality cheeses. We wanted to honor the memory of our Great Grann and Grannie by serving the same high quality dishes and some of their recipes to our customers." The quality and care that they put into their dishes shines right through to your taste buds!
Great Granns offers surprisingly large portions of all of their menu items. You can start with an appetizer of Crispy Chicken Wings, Buffalo Shrimp, Southern Fried Catfish Nuggets, Fried Shrimp Salad or Seafood Fries. I have it on good authority that the Catfish Nuggets rival those you would get in New Orleans! Not only do they offer a fried shrimp basket but they also have a lobster basket offered on their menu. That's not quite so common to see this far away from the great state of Maine.

There is an incredible variety of sub and sandwich offerings on Great Granns menu. Some of these choices are grilled cheese, a classic BLT, turkey burger, tuna melt, chopped fish, shrimp po'boy, salmon club and a jumbo lump crabcake that is "to die for"! Who needs Maine lobster when you have got Maryland blue crabs? Besides these regular sandwich options, Great Granns also has a "pit stand". That is right, pit beef, pit turkey and pit chicken as well as ribs.

If you are looking for platters or dinners you will not be disappointed. All platters are served with yellow rice and grilled asparagus as well as Great Granns signature cream sauce. They offer lamb chops, chicken and a variety of seafood platters. You can also add jumbo shrimp, lump crabmeat or a lobster tail to your platter. There is a large variety of pasta and wraps as well as entre sized salads. Their mac & cheese is out of this world and comes in several varieties including chicken mac and fried lobster mac!

Dinners include options such as chicken breast, whiting, catfish, NY strip steak, lamb chops and surf and turf. Each comes with two sides and they have many of those to choose from! If you're feeling even more adventurous then stuff your dinner choice with jumbo lump crabmeat. You cannot go wrong there.

So, if I have not intised you enough to come by 1724 Woodlawn Drive to visit Great Granns for lunch or dinner, then come by on the early side. Great Granns has just started serving brunch starting at 11 o'clock on weekday mornings!
