A Day In Wheaton

The City of Wheaton is located in Montgomery County in Maryland, USA. It derives its name from Frank Wheaton, an officer in the United States Army who hailed from Rhode Island and served in the Union Army. He rose to the rank of major-general during and after the American Civil War.

The city has a population of 48,284. Established at Leesborough, a small district located at the junction of three major roads, the city has grown to be a home for people from all walks of life. Not only that, the city has become a vibrant commercial center with several attractions.

1. Wheaton Regional Park
It is overseen by the Montgomery County, was established in 1960 and covers several pieces of land making it one of the country's largest parks with a total area of 536 acres. The park is home to several recreational opportunities which include hiking, ice skating and horseback riding.

It also hosts sub parks that include Brookside Gardens and Brookside Nature Center. Another sub park you can visit is the F. Frank Rubini Athletic Complex. The park is home to the Ovid Haze Wells Carousel and a miniature train, a replica of the 1863 C.P Huntington train.

You can enjoy a ride on the miniature train which takes visitors on a short tour of the park. Don't forget to ride the Herschel Spillman Company 1915 musical carousel. It features 33 jumping horses, 3 zebras and 2 chariots. To enjoy the miniature train and carousel rides, visit in April and September on weekends. If you are a resident or traveler, you can enjoy the rides daily from May to August.

2. Brookside Nature Center
Located within Wheaton Regional Park at 1400 Glenallan Ave, it offers different programs suitable for all ages, interests and abilities. You can learn about the forest habitat via easy to access boardwalks or gaze at the blue heron located at the pond. If your kids are tagging along, visit the wooded nature play area. Here, kids will have the time of their lives and you will get to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

From there, you can visit the 1870s at the Harper Homestead and move on to explore the hiking trails. Are you a naturalist interested in animals? Why not visit the exhibits and watch live animals such as reptiles, amphibians and arthropods. Remember not to feed them unless instructed and don't get too close. They may be caged but they are still wild animals.

3. Montgomery Art Association
The Montgomery Art Association is a non-profit organization established in 1954 and incorporated in 1991. As a member organization, it accepts members that include experienced artists, amateurs and other professionals. The organization also sponsors regular lectures and artist demonstrations, museum field trips, online sales and community outreach programs through college scholarships and children art activities.

Located along 11160 Veirs Mill Road, MAA features new artists every month. If you are interested in art and are currently visiting Wheaton, the gallery opens on Monday through Saturday from 11 AM to 8PM. On Sunday, it opens from 11 AM to 7 PM.

4. Wheaton Veterans Park
Located along 11200 Amherst Ave, Wheaton Veteran Park is an attractive landscaped open space that pays tribute to those who have served the country in various military disciplines. Apart from honoring the military, the park honors the former Director of Parks and Commissioner.
