At Barrett Family Chiropractic in Woodlawn, Maryland, located near the Social Security Administration, we look out for your good heath! We do more than just care for your neck pain, back pain and general musculoskeletal ailments. Dr. Barrett and Staff feel it is our mission to help you achieve and maintain your optimum health. Incorporating herbs into your diet is a great and easy way to boost your overall health. Last time we touched on this subject I talked about Basil, Parsley and Rosemary. All are easy to grow and it\'s a fun DIY project. This time let\'s talk about the benefits of turmeric, cinnamon and ginger.

Turmeric is a spice used in curry but, used alone, it can complement many vegetable and meat dishes, even some of the more flavorful fish. Turmeric contains curcumin which is a powerful anti-inflammatory which works similarly to Cox-2 inhibitor drugs. These drugs and curcumin reduce the Cox-2 enzyme that causes the pain and swelling of arthritis and other joint irritations. Small clinical trials done at Johns Hopkins University also strongly suggest that 400mg of curcumin 3 times a day can help prevent colon cancer and Alzheimer\'s disease.

Cinnamon has been shown to reduce blood sugar by 10% in type 2 diabetics. It also reduces heart related risks, a particular concern for diabetics, by reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels. As large amounts of the actual spice can be dangerous so use it to flavor your food but also consider taking it as a water-soluble extract in a 1 g dose capsule.

Ginger can help prevent or control nausea caused by many different sources. Prengnacy, motion sickness and chemotherapy are three big causes of nausea which can be safely treated with ginger. Serotonin is a chemical produced by the brain and the stomach when you\'re nauseous and ginger can block the effects of the serotonin. Free radicals can be another cause of stomach upset and the strong antioxidant powers of ginger can help significantly. This antioxidant property also makes ginger a good candidate to help reduce your cancer risk. Ginger also helps regulate blood flow which may lower blood pressure and it also has an anti-inflammatory property which may help ease arthritic pain much like the anti-inflammatory properties in turmeric.
