The Best Parks & Museums Located In Alexandria VA

A visit to Alexandria, VA

Your visit is not complete without a visit to the museum or the park. At the museum you can learn a lot about the history of this city which has a lot that even some Alexandrian s do not know about. The parks too are a great place to relax and have fun.
Here are a few of my favorite recommendations in Alexandria.

Fort Ward Park

Here you can visit both a museum and a park within the same location. This park is situated on over 40 acres of land for the historical park. Originally this was used in 1861 to 1865 during the civil war as a Union fort that defended the Capital, Washington DC.
As you walk around the grounds, you will see the reconstructed shelters for high ranking military officers, as well as cannons that were used during the war. What many people find fascinating are the underground bomb shelters which provided cover for up to 500 men during the war.

At the Fort Ward Museum

You can also see replica buildings of the originals that stood on that land way back in the 1800's. On display, you can also see original uniforms of some of the soldiers, letters written during the civil war as well as weapons and recreational artifacts like musical instruments. If you wish to learn more, you can buy a video that explains more from the information and gift shop.
You can choose to spend the entire day touring this museum and park or just a few hours.

George Washington Masonic Memorial

If you have heard or read about George Washington's Masonic fraternity, this memorial is a chance to actually see artifacts of his fraternity. It is a favorite among a number of visitors to Alexandria who enjoy history. A number of people are impressed by the 17 ft bronze statue of George Washington. The tour is free and does not take up a lot of your time.

Chinquapin Recreational Park

There are a number of sporting activities here including swimming, tennis, and racquetball. It is a fun place to let off steam, or if you have young ones, the Cameron Run Regional Park may be a place they will enjoy. It has a water slide and miniature golf which are fun activities for both young and old and you can actually spend the whole day there.

Bike Trail

If you would like to see a number of parks, you can try out the Mount Vernon bike trail, you will be able to enjoy a number of scenic parks in Alexandria, the trail goes a long Potomac river, and goes through George Washington Estate which you may also serve as a historical tour, you will also get the chance to go to old town Alexandria. The section through Old Town may not be suitable for young children though because it goes through busy traffic. You can choose to create your own bike trail though which will go through the parks only and you can make stops as you please maybe to buy ice cream or just take in the view.
